The Olympus E-System cameras feature an outstanding invention to protect the camera’s delicate, precision sensor from dust.

Dust is a much greater problem for digital cameras than for 35mm film cameras.   With SLRs in particular there is a real risk that dust will enter the camera while the lens is being changed. With film cameras dust particles move with the film as it is wound on so that only one picture is normally affected. In addition dust may be also caused from within the camera.

However, if a dust particle falls on a digital camera’s image sensor, it normally remains there, to be joined by more dust particles. Not only that but the individual pixels are so miniscule that even the tiniest dust particle may cover several sensors, and over time this will lead to a significant deterioration in image quality.

When the anti-dust function is activated, a supersonic wave engine surrounding the filter generates a series of ultrasonic vibrations. This shakes off any dust and other foreign particles of a certain size from the filter in front of the sensor. Following this procedure, the CCD is dust free again.

Automatic dust reduction

This patented anti-dust function is automatically activated every time the camera is switched on or whenever pixel mapping is carried out.

When the SSWF is working in the E-300/ E-500 a blue LED blinks on top of the camera.

This self cleaning function of the sensor means that the camera will need much less internal cleaning. As this can only be carried out at a service centre this will save you time and money!
